Welcome to our fifth and final AI myth that may be hampering your progress. In case you’re new to the series, we’ve discussed Getting the Basics of AI right, explored the value of Composed Solutions, dispelled the notion of a Single Vendor Solution, and considered the risk of leveraging AI purely for Simple and Repetitive tasks.
Today we take a look at Myth #5 – The notion that you need to hire senior experts!
This isn’t entirely a myth. It’s best described as myth-y or myth-esque, two terms that I very much hope I just invented but I’m sure have already been claimed. Like any good myth, this one has a lot of nuance.
We’re not saying that senior experts have no or even minimal value. We ARE senior experts, so we’re not about to lobby for our extinction. We are saying that when it comes to transforming your organization to deliver on the awesome promise and daunting threat of AI, you should go with talent emerging from an immersive program (university, academy, or comprehensive certification).
Here are some advantages people like us senior leaders bring to the table
- Translating AI capabilities into business value
- Experience driving organizational change and managing large-scale transformations
- Internal playbooks on navigating the politics and culture
- Understanding regulatory risk and remediations
Here’s where the youngsters run circles around us:
- Not hindered by legacy thinking and “how we do things here”
- They’ve never not experienced AI, so they have developed a native familiarity with AI/ML frameworks
- Exposure to the latest and greatest AI techniques, approaches, and tools
- Strong and most recent theoretical foundations
- Willingness and hunger to experiment
- Greater propensity to innovate
When assessing your organizational maturity with AI, something we’d be thrilled to help you with, we suggest you think of an Early, Mid, Mature construct. The exciting thing is that, given the nascent nature of AI within most organizations, you have a justifiable shortcut by assuming you’re in the Early stage until you see evidence to the contrary. While you will need to hire young AI talent at every stage, we advocate fractional senior leaders at the early stage, emphasizing hiring young talent who can execute fast and well.
So…there you have it, the last of our Five Myths About AI That Are in Your Way. With these myths dispelled, the path to AI mastery emerges. The blend of youthful drive and seasoned insight is your key to unlocking AI’s potential in ways you hadn’t imagined.
As we wrap up this myth-busting journey, remember: the future of AI isn’t reserved for those who wait—it’s claimed by those who adapt, innovate, and dare to rethink what’s possible. Reach out, and let’s pioneer this future together.
